GETTING TO TIMISOARA

By Plane

Timisoara is serviced by the “Traian Vuia” International Airport which operates flights to and from several locations in Europe. You can see a list of connected destinations here. Several airline operators fly to Timisoara including Lufthansa, Tarom, WizzAir, United Airlines and CarpatAir. There are several ways of getting into the city from the airport including an hourly bus (tickets purchasable from the Information Desk), car rental services and taxies available in front of the terminal. If you want to travel by taxi, please use one of the available cars parked outside the terminal (in the main parking lot) to the right as you exit the building. DO NOT accept any offers from taxi drivers waiting for you near the customs or terminal exit. They usually charge a much larger fee than registered cars. The price for a trip to the West University of Timisoara depends on the time of day and traffic conditions but should not exceed, in any case 50 RON, (approx. 13 EUR). Please also note that the E4 Bus does not drop you off near the University (see map above) but within a 20 minute walking distance.

Other major international airports within close distance to Timisoara are located in Budapest (Liszt Ferenc International Airport) and Belgrade (Nikola Tesla International Airport). You can then book a private trip by car or minibus to and from Timisoara. There are several companies that service these routes including Simplicity (for Belgrade and Budapest transfers) and Recreation (for Budapest transfers). You need to book a transfer in advance and the driver will wait for you at your chosen airport. If you need help with booking a transfer, please contact the organizers. Trips usually cost 35 EUR (Budapest) and 90 EUR (Belgrade) one way. The cars will drop you off at any address in Timisoara.

By Train

The main train station in Timisoara is Timisoara Nord. You can find an up to date train schedule for internal trips at Infofer (including ticket purchases and reservations). If you want to travel on an international train, please check schedules on the Austrian Rail search engine Scotty as it covers ALL European train routes. From the train station you can take a taxi to the University (please only use licensed taxis located outside the station and ACROSS the main road) or you can use the public transport service. Tickets can be purchased from the new stands outside the station (to the right as you exit through the main building). The best option is to take the Number 8 tram to Cluj Station which is near the University (see map above).

By Car

Timisoara is serviced by several national and European routes and one highway which connects with Arad and further (via express roads) to the Hungarian highway network. To plan a car trip use Google Maps or Via Michelin. The University is located very near to the city centre and has several parking spots available. These may be full however depending on the time of day. Parking in Timisoara is generally not free but may be paid for via SMS using the TPark system. Some smaller streets behind the University also allow for free parking but may be full during the day.

TRAVELLING IN TIMISOARA

By Taxi

While not the cheapest in Romania, Timisoara Taxis offer relatively low charges for a good service. A typical trip (halfway across the city) will cost around 15 RON (approx. 3 EUR) with night time tariffs being 10% higher. If you use one of the registered taxi companies you can be sure of a fair and correct service. A list of companies and their phone numbers can be found here. Note that if you have an international phone you need to add the Romanian dial code +40 in front of the taxi number.

By Public Transport

Timisoara offers three forms of public transport in Trams, Buses and TrolleyBuses. A ticket for one trip, one way is 2 RON (approx. 0.4 EUR) and can be purchased in most of the stations or at news stands and small shops (look for a sign with “BILETE RATT”). Some buses operate an express regime and require an Express Ticket which costs 2.5 RON. (approx 0.5 EUR). Tickets need to be stamped at stamping machines located in the tram or bus once you begin your journey. A map of the services can be accessed here.

If you have any concerns, questions or need assistance with your Timisoara travel plans, contact the organizers for help and information.
